A short guide to installing Starchaser Linux on a virtual machine or real hardware.

Version 1.0 is coming soon.

This guide describes the installer. The public ISO is not available yet; check the download page for its release state.

Before you start

Use an x86-64 computer or virtual machine with UEFI firmware and Secure Boot turned off. Provide 2 or more CPUs, at least 4 GB of memory, and a 40 GB drive or larger. The installer needs at least 28 GB (26 GiB) of drive space.

For a virtual machine, enable 3D acceleration if available. On real hardware, back up anything you want to keep before continuing. Erase removes the contents of the selected drive.

  1. Boot the ISO

When an ISO is available, verify it using the download instructions. Attach it to your virtual machine, or write it to a USB drive and choose that drive from your computer’s UEFI boot menu.

  2. Open the installer

The graphical installer starts on its own. If the graphics cannot run it, use the text installer. You can start the text wizard from a console at any time:

    sudo starchaser-install wizard
  3. Choose your drive and account

Choose Erase for the drive you intend to use. Check that the selected drive is the right one, then choose a user name and password and start the installation.

  4. Let installation finish

The installer records its progress in /var/log/starchaser-install.log. That log is also copied onto the installed system.

  5. Restart and settle in

Restart into the installed system and sign in. The welcome tour walks through the first settings and useful shortcuts.

Keep a way back.

After installation, open Settings > Recovery to check that restore points are set up. Learn how recovery works.
